"Twelve Days of Christmas."
Comments.
This is a popular spreadsheet project ideally done around Christmas time.
Students enjoy doing it and many are surprised at how many animals and birds that will be in Santa's sack.
It is an excellent use of Spreadsheets in mathematics.
The project is suitable for all ages and particularly those students who are competent in using a computer - as most are!
The New Zealand flavour is given by the birds, animals and trees. Students could decorate their project with pictures or drawings of these!

A New Zealand version of the popular Christmas carol The Twelve Days of Christmas is printed here. The gifts given by `my true love' on each day are New Zealand native animals and birds.
1. How many wood pigeons were received in total? (The answer is not two!)
2. Make up a spreadsheet that displays day-by-day the number of each type of native animal or bird received and the total number of gifts received each day.
Read from your spreadsheet the total number of each gift that was received during the twelve days of Christmas.
3. Find the formula that links the day of Christmas (y) and the total number of gifts received on that day (x).
